Having searched quite a few websites to look for a new 3D modelling package to replace my aging 3D Canvas, I can't help but notice how few recent posts there are from anyone using said packages. Either this is because everyone is really good with the software, or nobody is bothering anymore. Payware models have been released to such a high standard that the normal gamer tends to expect such levels of complexity in freeware models. I'm wondering if this is putting people off doing any freeware engines and cabs. Believe me, this is a very time consuming and technical hobby and I'm glad I'm part of a team that is helping out in all aspects of route and stock creation. I suppose nearly everything has been released and we're into the niech areas of interest now. I just think it is now a real daunting job for a newbie that wants to create something. Of course, you can always create it and just keep it for yourself. Anyone know of any good 3D modelling packages with good support for Trainsimulator other than 3DS Max?

I do know people create on it and you might find it better then 3DS Max.

I picked up Blender recently (having done modelling in other softwares before) and found it reasonably straightforward to use. Combined with the Briage TS exporter for Blender you can pretty much do the same things you did in 3DC for free.
Though my skills in modelling don't extend beyond basic scenery items, so far, you'd probably pick up the more advanced stuff quicker than I will.

I have heard Blender is not very intuitive, but then nor was 3DC when I first started using it. I may perservier with it as it is open source so will always be improved at no cost to the user. I'll try importing one of my cabs to see what a mess it makes with the textures and model. I have been looking at some tutorials on YouTube and found them useful but very intensive. I just think 3D Crafter is dying a slow, painful death with little support from anyone now. No posts from the Author in over a year. It still does the job but had no texture baking or rendering and struggles with high poly models which Trainsimulator can now handle.
