... From ridin' on top of the car. Not strictly VDL, or even LT in this instance, but I thought I'd put up this screenshot of my rudimentary attempt at an LCC reskin for Richard's E1 Tram. Some mates of mine are working on a fictional 1920s NLR route and were using an LT E1 in all the tram shots, which I thought would never do for such an early date! These shots were taken on my virtual pre-grouping 'photo plank', by the way... the SECR stock was already there. Next thing to try and sort out is some conduit track. Any takers?

I'm sure Richard will be impressed with this reskin. You might ask him to make you some conduit, whatever that is. Excellent work, it's a beautiful model to start with, but this elevates it above the ordinary.

That's most kind of you, but it is quite a rough reskin and not all that accurate either. Still, I'm honoured that you like it!
I'll drop Richard a line later to ask, but to explain what the conduit is, or at least what it looks like, -

You sit close together and spoon all the way....... And I'm sure they didn't mean Big Spoon/Little Spoon LOL
One suggestion regarding conduit is if the area is flat and level to reduce the height of overhead to road level, if that is possible?

I'd say an easier way to mimic the conduit would be a loft model which could be laid as an offset of the track. Our website host Xavier ( Backdated trainsim) has made us lofted items out of 3D models. It's making the 3D model which will be the tricky bit.

I was more wondering about reskinning the track...
Still need to contact Richard! I'll get round to it eventually...

What a fascinating subject this is, I really enjoyed that film too. Building an authentic London Tram route is a huge undertaking. Although the mapping might be doable, getting hold of assets such as buildings would be difficult. Street furniture, etc etc. I wish you all success with this project as it has huge merit. In fact, this is how the VDL project came into being, when a route builder, one Jimi Ibett built a route where Richard's model of an R49 could run in MSTS.

Thank you for your kind words! It's not strictly speaking a tram route, the primary focus being a recreation of the fictional Aldgate & Bow Railway, proposed to be part of the North London Railway. However, trams ran in this area so of course they have to feature!
We have recently gained the ability to create custom assets, so although it's early days yet we are making progress!
Unfortunately I can't work out how to upload photos from a phone...

Echo Eddie's comments, and do please keep posting info and progress. Matters not whether it's relevant to DR or Underground, it's still fascinating and very welcome.

No further news I'm afraid, but does anyone know if Richard's alright? He hasn't been on here since September, which worries me.

Sorry guys for double-post but was having problems uploading the pic above; this is my 1/43 LT fleet left to right.
Wistow/Terry Russell E/1; IXO RT with added detail; restored Spot-On RM; scratchbuilt LT K-Class Trolleybus. The full build for this is on RM Web.
Currently creating working LT buses, Trolleys and service vehicles in 1/76 using Minic Motorways as a basis......

Love the K -class trolley bus. Superb model. I've got a great book about London's trolley bus routes. Fantastic read.

Love the K -class trolley bus. Superb model. I've got a great book about London's trolley bus routes. Fantastic read. It took months of my life from start to finish Eddie; have a look at the dates on the build on RM Web...... I've got the plans and everything needed to build an L/3 to match - maybe I'll start while I am furloughed from work!
I'm not sure if my wife could cope with losing her dinner table (again) during the process......
I will post a couple of images of the Minic conversions too - There's K Class and L Class trolleybuses - these were converted from LBC resin kits, a pair of EFE RTs; one roofbox and one standard, a Corgi OOC Routemaster, a Concept Model red RF, and a homebuilt LT tower wagon. I've also got a trio of home-cast Corgi Q1 clones, and my next project is to motorise an original OOC Q1 with a more powerful motor due to the weight.
I also have around six original Minic red RMs, both early and late, and three of the green ones. Also in the collection is at least one of the non-racing cars in original condition, four coaches in different colours trucks, tankers, breakdown wagons...... the list is endless!
I also plan on creating some other what-ifs; a MkII Zodiac, PA Cresta and these would fit nicely in with the originals in terms of styling.....

I'd love to learn more about your K-Class Trolleybus build. I can see from the photo this is in a different class to the usual commercial product. I can remember riding on these as a child, and your model just brings me out in goosebumps. It's so accurate. I can almost smell the interior. I can hear the motors and feel the surprising turn of acceleration that these vehicles were capable of. Zero emissions and truly green, before green had been invented. And a depole was something special to a child. Fun and games, brilliant. Why can't we bring them back ? So, if you have an album of build photos I'd love to pore through those. You have captured an era here , to be sure. A true modelling engineer of exceptional ability. I take my hat off sir.

No problem Eddie; I'm just zipping all the images, diagrams, and graphic files that I used to build 1058. I was able to construct the vehicle as it appeared between 23/04/62 and the last day of trolleys in London; the 8th. of May.... I found enough images of this particular trolley know what adverts it was displaying in the run-up to abandonment, and created the ad, blinds, number plates etc. and then laser-printed them. Also the seat moquette was treated in the same way!
When I was building it, a number of modellers thought I was building to 1/24 (Sunstar RM/RT scale!) and were somewhat shocked when I said it was 1/43.
I'll upload the link to the files a bit later - enjoy!
We had the 657 and 667 trolleys running at the end of the road in Chiswick when I was a small boy, and at the time we also had Routemasters running on the 255. My preference when my mum took me shopping was always the trolley...

Hmmm... How could I justify a Trolleybus on Canal Road... Experimental Conduitbus?

Hmmm... How could I justify a Trolleybus on Canal Road... Experimental Conduitbus? Tramway replacement programme?....... The first trolleybus in London ran in 1931 - You would have to build it though..... Google the LUT Diddler and weep at the curves!

I thank-you for that download. I thought this was much bigger. !/43 makes what you did even more jaw dropping. It actually looks more like 1/4 scale in its detail level. Absolutely amazing.

Thanks for the compliments Eddie; I am seriously considering building a trolley in 1/24 to match my Sunstar models; here's a Sunstar what-if; an RT in 1960's condition....
This was bought fairly cheaply as someone had 'had a go' at repainting the upper deck windows red - I've managed to remedy the issues, and created all the blinds and adverts, also added indicators etc.
By the 60's, many RTs had a rubber platform covering, so I replicated that too.
The non-roofbox model is a pretty rare find - there is one currently on eBay for £450, and there is no way I would have desecrated a mint and boxed model, so I was very pleased to acquire one in less-than-pristine condition.
And here's the Hachette Partworks Routemaster; Coke can to show how massive this model is!
Fortunately, my wife is a very accomodating lady when it comes to my modelling and collecting; I count myself very lucky!
Now a 1/12 scale Q1 trolley to match this would be very impressive!

Richard here, I am still around. Just been distracted by many other things.
About three or four years ago I started a tram route and attempted to build conduit track. I came unstuck with the points and couldn't get the 'slot' to look right. I suspect the original files were lost in a hard disk crash I had.
One distraction I haven't started yet is a 1/24th Revell Routemaster that's been on the shelf for a few years!
